Plastic is an essential material used extensively in the seafood industry from fishing gear nets to fish farms to packaging however like many other sectors, Plastic mismanagement post use has caused a pollution crisis and there are calls for more circularity in the sector and less virgin plastic to be produced. Researchers predict that by 2050, the cumulation of greenhouse gas emissions from plastic could reach over 56 gigatons—10–13 percent of the entire remaining carbon budget (Plastic and Climate: The Hidden Costs of a Plastic Planet (CIEL May 2019).  However, It is impossible to conceive of a plastic free industry.  Instead, a responsible approach to plastic in every aspect of its journey from design, use patterns and post use fate is necessary to prevent plastic leakage, create circularity, smart solutions, best practice and eliminate plastic from entering the oceans, This has benefits on both the environment and on climate impact.
