Northern Ireland Water is a Government Owned Company (GoCo), set up in April 2007 to provide water and wastewater services in Northern Ireland. We deliver 605 million litres of clean, safe drinking water to approximately 840,000 households and businesses and take away and clean 373 million litres of wastewater per day.
What developments have you made in your responsible plastic management journey?
NI Water has a strong focus on the environment and are committed to tackling the problems caused by plastic pollution through it’s Refillution campaign. The Refillution Campaign is a local bespoke scheme for Refill in Northern Ireland, which was rolled out during 2019 by NI Water. It is an innovative approach to improve the environment both locally and globally by promoting the refilling of a reusable bottle with tap water instead of buying a single use plastic one. This initiative supports sustainability in the wider society through enabling the public with the capability to refill a water bottle, thus reducing single use plastic usage and plastic pollution in the environment, whilst promoting health by staying hydrated through drinking more world class tap water for free with huge financial savings.
What responsible plastic management achievements have you made in 2025 so far?
This year (2025) has been an extremely busy year with the Refillution Campaign. To date NI Water’s Education Team has visited 158 schools reaching over 10,000 pupils. The Education Team has also delivered Refillution to a number of high profile and well attended events like the Balmoral Show, the Lisburn City Mayor Show, Citi Bank Green Day and the NI Civil Service staff event in the Waterfront Hall.
To date the team have distributed 17,000 reusable water bottles in their endeavours to change people behaviours when it comes to the use of single use plastics.
NI Water’s Education Team also support the campaign with a Refillution Toolkit along with a Pledge Board where we ask the general public to sign to avail of a free reusable water bottle. More information can be found on our website. www.niwater.com/refillution-join/
