What developments have you made in your responsible plastic management journey?
We are committed to sending zero plastic to landfill. In our journey to this goal, we have been assessing our plastic use across the business and on our sites, developing clear strategies to prevent plastic reaching landfill. Our actions to date have included packaging refusal, single use plastic audits, training and awareness sessions, a review of our procurement to eliminate plastic in our supply chain, removal of plastic from our marketing and stationery departments and integration of recycled plastics in our PPE and materials.
What responsible plastic management achievements have you made in 2025 so far?
During 2025 we have been concentrating on a project to address a specific non-recyclable flexible plastic used in our water projects. As our utilities portfolio in the water sector increases, this particular plastic has become a significant waste stream and will be high impact area for Farrans and our clients. The plastic coverings used in these projects are a difficult single use plastic waste stream, that can often become flyaway waste; therefore we are working closely with our supply chain to remove this from our materials procurement and purchase hard reusable, recyclable covers instead.
How has RPM Program assisted in your journey?
We have benefited greatly from our RPM coaching and awareness sessions to increase our knowledge and awareness of plastics within our business. RPM have encouraged us to undertake a plastic inventory to address more high impact areas for our business, addressing them in future initiatives.
What are your 2025 Plastic Free July goals?
We have been using Plastic Free July to raise awareness with our entire workforce, directly addressing single use plastic packaging we encounter in our canteens and offices. This year we’re reinforcing this with awareness packs going to each of our sites.
